A Broken Heart

US Airdate: 21st October 2001

Writer- J.J. Abrams Director- Ken Olin

Guest Stars:  Miguel Sandoval () Gina Torres (Anna Espinosa) Evan Dexter Parke (Charlie) Faran Tahir () Maurice Chasse () Bernard White () Angus Scrimm (Agent McCullough) Sarah Shahi (Jenny) Arabella Holzbog (Sydney's Mom) Hector Aristizabal (Waiter) Sayed Badreya (Vendor) Jeff Chase (Bodyguard) Haley Gilbert (Rachel) Soren Hellerup (Doctor) Subash Kundanmal (Dhiren Petel) Tony Sears (German SD-6 Agent) Alex Veadow (K-Directorate Officer)

Plot: The episode begins with Sydney and Anna frantically memorizing a code, quickly being destroyed, written 500 years before by Milo Rambaldi and placed in the lockbox (see ep. 3 for clarification).  Later, Sydney deliberates on whether or not she should give SD-6 the correct code.  Agent Vaughn insists she does, as her role as a double agent is in constant jeopardy and to give them an incorrect code would make her seem suspicious.

The completed code represents a geographical location--a church in Malagia, Spain.  Sydney is sent there by SD-6, where once again she faces off against Anna in a brutal fight, eventually proving victorious.  Sydney is able to retrieve a circular gold crystal from the church's stained glass window and return safely to L.A.

Francie's suspicions of Charlie grow, and she enlists Sydney's help in tracking him; they catch him kissing another girl.  Meanwhile, Will is unraveling still more clues concerning Danny's death and beginning to recognize he has feelings for Sydney.  Later, he follows up on last episode by trying to kiss her again--an extremely unconfortable moment for both of them.

At SD-6, Marshall's study of the crystal leads him to discover a polymer created by Rambaldi, whose inventions are beginning to appear to be the roots of a much bigger project.

Sydney and Dixon are soon sent to Casablanca, Morocco to investigate a plot to destroy the United Commerce Organization.  Sydney is recognized by a bodyguard of Luc Jacqnoud, the man she is trying to approach.  After a fierce battle, Sydney returns to Dixon to find their contact and friend Bak Ibrahim dead, adding to Sydney's emotional distress.

Jack is interrogated by McCullough at SD-6.  He is haunted by some truth he remembers of Sydney's mother.  He then proceeds to blow off a dinner reservation he and Sydney had set up--the first one they would've had since she was little.

Vaughn offers Sydney his support as a friend when she breaks down after Jack stands her up and reveals the emotional trauma of being a double-agent.

Sydney and Dixon's next mission sends them to Sao Paolo, the location of the United Commerce Organization's conference, where Nobel peace prize winner Dhiren Patel is scheduled to speak.  Patel mysteriously collapses at an evening social event, and is rushed away by Jacqnoud's paramedic-impersonating team.  Sydney follows them not to a hospital but to a nearby refinery, where, from the rooftop, she watches as one of Jacqnoud's men surgically implants a bomb into Patel's pacemaker...
